Label sizes, dots and dpi

Every number in a ZPL label is a count of printer dots, so the same design is a different set of numbers on every printer. These tables convert the common label sizes to dots at 203, 300 and 600 dpi, and explain what has to change when a label moves between machines.

Resolution changes how many dots fit in an inch, not how big the label is. A coordinate of 400 is halfway across a 4 inch label at 203 dpi and a third of the way across it at 300 dpi. A 4 × 6 in label is ^PW812 ^LL1218 at 203 dpi and ^PW1200 ^LL1800 at 300 dpi.

Useful constants: 203 dpi is very close to 8 dots per millimetre, 300 dpi is 11.8, and 600 dpi is 23.6. If you think in millimetres, multiplying by 8 gets you within a dot on the most common printers.

Moving a label between printers

Four things scale with resolution, and forgetting any one of them produces a label that looks almost right.

In practice people round 203 → 300 to × 1.5 and 203 → 600 to × 3, which is close enough for text and shapes. Round ^BY up rather than down: a narrow bar that comes out slightly wide still scans, and one that comes out slightly thin often does not.

Font 0 is a condensed face, so these counts are generous compared with a normal-width font; treat them as an upper bound and leave margin. Where the content varies per record, let MakeZPL’s shrink-to-fit mode pick the size against your real data rather than guessing from the longest value you can think of.

How many dots is a 4 x 6 label?

812 x 1218 dots at 203 dpi, 1200 x 1800 at 300 dpi, and 2400 x 3600 at 600 dpi. Declare it with ^PW812 ^LL1218 for the 203 dpi case.

How do I convert millimetres to ZPL dots?

Divide by 25.4 to get inches, then multiply by the print resolution. At 203 dpi that works out at almost exactly 8 dots per millimetre, at 300 dpi 11.8, and at 600 dpi 23.6.

What resolution is my Zebra printer?

Most desktop and industrial Zebras are 203 dpi; 300 dpi is common for small-text and pharmacy work, and 600 dpi is reserved for very small labels and fine electronics marking. The printer's configuration label, printed from the front panel, states it.

Will my 203 dpi label print on a 300 dpi printer?

It will print, but at two thirds of the intended size, tucked into the top-left corner — every coordinate is in dots, and the dots got smaller. Multiply all coordinates, font heights and ^BY values by 1.5, or just change the dpi in MakeZPL and let it rescale the design.

Does higher dpi mean a better barcode?

It means finer control, not automatically better output. A barcode's narrow bar has a physical width that scanners expect; at 600 dpi you need a ^BY of 6 to 8 to reach the same physical width that ^BY2 or 3 gives at 203 dpi.
